Parsons is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to support the NeuroTrauma Department’s Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) research program at the Naval Medical Research Center, located at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, in Silver Spring, MD.   Parson’s provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to NMRC.

Responsibilities:

1. Assists in designing, developing, executing, and implementing scientific research and/or development in the areas of traumatic brain injury and/or post-traumatic stress disorder.

2. Performs laboratory research utilizing a variety of experimental techniques in neuroscience, experimental psychology, and cellular/molecular biology. Specifically, common lab techniques will involve animal surgery and behavioral testing, ELISA, PCR, hormone assays, and others as necessary.

3. Collects and handles samples and keeps detailed records of experiments.

4. Assists with the preparation of data and manuscripts for scientific presentations or journal publications, and with grant writing.

5. Assists with training laboratory staff as needed.

6. Maintains cleanliness of laboratory areas.

7. Performs weekly blast experiments.

8. Monitoring daily activities of research assistants assigned to the projects.

9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Knowledge of neuroscience and related cellular/molecular biology are required; Candidates with strong background and hands-on experience in animal handling (rodents); animal behavioral testing; animal surgery and aseptic techniques; molecular techniques such as ELISAs, PCR, or hormone assays; excellent time management and self-motivated.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: PhD in neuroscience, experimental psychology or related discipline.

Minimum Experience: 0-2 years.

Physical Capabilities: Long periods of standing and sitting; intricate work with hands; carrying of light and moderately heavy laboratory equipment; ability to travel locally to meet collaborators.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: May provide guidance to laboratory staff.

Work Environment: Laboratory environment; may involve working with biohazards; may require working evenings and weekends.

Must be eligible to obtain and maintain, or currently possess Secret clearance.
